The Shiniest Operating System Around – 11/25/09

On the 19th, Google revealed its new desktop Operating System, Chrome OS. To say the least, it’s unique.

The entire OS runs in Google’s Chrome web browser. No data is saved to the storage on the computer itself. Everything is stored online, in the “cloud.” While there is likely no one more trustworthy for storing our data than Google, everyone should be a little wary of cloud-stored data. Anyone who owns a Sidekick can explain why.

It’s an interesting idea, though. Being internet-based gives it two great uses immediately. Put it on a 3G-enabled Netbook, a device low on actual storage, or put it on terminal computers. All of your data is associated with your log-in, so it doesn’t matter what computer you use along as it runs Chrome OS.

It won’t be out until next year, but with its own cell phone OS and an upcoming desktop OS, I can see why many people think that Google is on its way to becoming the next Microsoft.
